Warley Abbey - the inspiration for Alverly's Lament

Warley Abbey is now demolished (very sad). But this place was the birth place of my grandfather. The whole family lived and worked in this large Gothic styled building. This was among many buildings across the UK that fell into disrepair and became known as lost buildings .

Knowing how fascinated I had become with my family history and indeed Warley Abbey, one of my wonderful daughters Sarah-Mae started work on what would ultimately became this amazing (and now much treasured) diorama.

Samuel Galton’s son Hubert commissioned the house, which was completed in 1820 and became known as Warley Abbey (and sometimes Warley Hall).  There is some fantastic information about Warley Abbey and its occupants here.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have this photo of my great grandparents George and Eliza Bretherick, with some of their children outside Warley Abbey.

A real pinch me moment!

Getting to visit Warley Abbey/Woods was an absolute dream come true for me and I'm hoping to make a return trip to this special place. After all, it inspired my very first novel.
